resources for the textile arts community
Rachel Hutchinson is a textile artist from County Antrim based at Blick Shared Studios on the Malone Road, Belfast. Following her 1st class Textile Crafts degree in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire in 2003, she moved on to become 'Product Development Executive' for a leading homewares company in Manchester before returning to Belfast to start her own business in 2006. Rachel has exhibited in a variety of galleries in Belfast, London, Reading, Halifax and Brighton and has received a number of awards for her artwork. Recently she produced the Major Textile commission for the Ulster Hospital maternity unit, and is now creating a textile installation piece for Windsor Women's Centre, funded by 'Arts & Business' and Stratagem.
Layering textures, I combine vintage fabrics, papers and paints with detailed stitchwork. I use hand-embroidered mending and traditional patchwork techniques in combination with contemporary compositions which serve as decorative pieces of artwork, while suggesting an undercurrent of contained history, narrative and identity.
My work is conceptually influenced by combining the old with the new, and representing the perpetual motion of generations. Using old objects and fabrics, I imagine that a story is contained within every warp and weft of the material. A recent commission for the Ulster Hospital Maternity Unit entitled 'Continuum' incorporated such concepts. It is a set of five canvases which represent five poignant stages of pregnancy or new life, and are a typical representation of my contemporary approach to embroidery. Each piece is a detailed exploration into a long heritage of textiles, with a fresh and modern appearance.
"A designer who knows her craft skills, at home with production as with aesthetics, Rachel's own very personal and distinctive signature design language can also make textiles a successful craft business."
(Emma Duggan, Craft NI, 'Perspective' Magazine, 2007)
Working primarily to either public or private commission, I strive to work with each individual to create something distinctive and unique to them. I am currently working on a three-dimensional installation piece on behalf of Arts and Business alongside other private commissions.
