resources for the textile arts community
Rebecca Mason is a textile/mixed media artist living and working in Cornwall. She has a Higher National Diploma in Fine Art (Creative Textiles) as well as various other qualifications in photography and ceramics. Rebecca is a new artist who believes that art should be accessible to all.
My artwork is inspired by the things that mean the most to me. My family, childhood memories, pets and those special places I've visited and connected with.
There has never been anything else I've wanted to do. It's always been art. From a young age I've always made things and it's just progressed from there.
Stitch has always fascinated me. When I was young my mother taught me how to stitch and when I went to college I was given the opportunity to push the boundaries of what everyone thought "stitch" was supposed to be.
I love to use heavy stitch. I find that there is something immensely satisfying about it. I tried many different ways of using stitch when I was at college and found that something just clicked when I used stitch in this particular way.
Since leaving college I have used stitch in several different ways and find now that, given the time, a piece of work lets you know what it needs to be "finished".
I always work in bodies of work with a recurring theme as I did at college. I find it so much easier to focus this way.
As time goes on I feel my work is becoming more varied. I am more willing now to use mixed media than ever I was before. I use traditional materials like oils sometimes, and at other times I use so many different media on one piece it would take too long to list! But time after time I will keep returning to textiles and stitch. It creeps into my "traditional" pieces over and over again without me even realising! But that's fine by me as it makes my pieces that little bit special.
My main aim now is to create pieces that anyone and everyone can afford to buy. I don't ever want people to think that art is out of their reach. Fantastic art should be available to everyone.
