resources for the textile arts community
Sarah Symes was born on Vancouver Island, Canada and grew up in Cheshire, England. She has had a passion for making art with fabric from a young age. She studied Architecture at the prestigious University College London, before training and working as a Graphic Designer.
My self-discovered process is the result of many years developing skills and techniques with fabric. I aspire to recreate my internal experiences of places and people through my textile art. My work represents an abstraction of real life, infused with memories evoked by a subject. Conjuring emotion through color, I call upon a palette that ranges from deep jewel tones to pale translucent overlays. I build up graphic elements and organic textures while manipulating composition to suggest familiar forms and landscapes.
Each piece begins as a sketched idea. I select quality fabrics and carefully pre-wash and hand dye each piece as needed. The fabric is then cut into strips or squares and stitched together using a sewing machine. It's an improvised process, more like painting or collage than traditional textile work, enabling the gradual build up of color and texture.
