resources for the textile arts community
I'm a contemporary Textile Artist based in West Yorkshire. I studied at Goldsmiths college, graduating in 1990 - there I was fortunate enough to have some amazing tutors: Alice Kettle, Sally Freshwater, Michael Brennand-Wood, the course tutor was Audrey Walker and the external examiner, Rozanne Hawksley, what a great list!
From then onwards I have been lecturing and exhibiting my work, whilst studying for further qualifications: 730 C&G Teaching, Certificate of Education from Warwick University and MA Textiles from UCE [Birmingham University]
I work with a variety of processes and techniques, exploring the thoughts and challenges of everyday life. Work exhibits throughout the country and I can often be seen demonstrating my skills at a range of textile events. In 2009 I was a featured artist at the Knitting and Stitching shows and in 2010 launched a solo touring show NEW GROUNDS.
Textiles is my full time occupation and compulsion.
Beyond what I had expected, I have realised my love of textiles and you have been inspirational.
Creative workshops to help you explore and expand: offering new skills and techniques with 1:1 mentoring to enhance your creative development.
All workshops run from 10am - 3 pm and include initial materials, tea/coffee and cake [usually homemade!]. They are held at my studio: Radiant Works, Back Union St., Huddersfield HD1 6AL.
An ongoing collection of workshops, the student group alters annually with a strong core of attendees who are encouraged to develop independent projects.
Autumn Term explores stitch and composition, following a dynamic design development model which starts with exciting drawing techniques for textile enthusiasts. We will be developing images into stitched surfaces and creating print screens for the following term... please see my website for the ongoing details.
By popular request, I have developed this wonderful workshop. You'll learn how to create your own textured printing plates, gather techniques for inking up your plate and print using an etching press. Stunning and sophisticated results are easily achieved. It's a very accessible process suitable for all levels of ability. You'll go home with a series of prints and a desire for more!
Thank you so much for the last two days on your printing course. I learnt such a lot and felt we all had a lot of help, advice and encouragement from you. I arrived home exhausted but with a head buzzing with ideas of how I could take things further. It was great to work in such a small group and to sit down together over lunch. Thanks again for your expertise, advice and encouragement.
Devoré explores combination fibres cloths, burning away one of the fibres to expose the delicate layer of cloth beneath. It's a fascinating technique - one which has captivated me for many years & undoubtedly it has become my area of specialism. This workshop offers you a spectacular range of uses for devoré - it's much more than mere velvet. You'll leave with a vast bundle of samples and a head bulging with ideas!
I shall be publishing a book in the autumn [2011], hopefully launching it at the popular Knitting and Stitching shows, so get the inside story first!
Following the success of NEW GROUNDS: solo touring exhibition, Dionne shares ideas to initiate stimulating textile surfaces for a plethora of applications.
Experimental mark making provides the energy for this inspirational workshop. Some textile students shy away from drawing, fear not - it's made accessible and enjoyable in an encouraging and friendly environment!
Transform your paper work into highly tactile compositions; exploring thread, stitch, cloth, layering etc. Progress your ideas and techniques simultaneously. Ideal for those wishing to embark on new areas of development &/or generating sketch book ideas - you'll have practical exercises to keep you constantly moving forward PLUS the opportunity for individual discussion & tuition.
Really it was just what I wanted... a relaxed atmosphere in a small group with stimulating and useful input from you with ideas which I can use to get me going on my art work. There was time to experiment with the techniques. The drawing exercises were particularly good. Although I've done a lot of a drawing before it's always useful to be reminded of ways back in to the creative process. I think you are skilled at creating a good atmosphere and inspiring us to work.
I offer talks, demonstrations and workshops to groups, guilds and colleges.
Follow the progress of my work across the last 20 years -– gosh that makes me feel old - I like to think I started young and have still got a lot to do! How I started, why I continue: Goldsmiths, Lecturing, MA, exhibiting... juggling!
A 4 year long, Arts Council supported project culminating in a solo touring show. This talk illustrated why and most importantly how I re-developed my work, charting inspiration, the progression of ideas and the development of the exhibition.
I'm often referred to as the 'Devoré Lady': I know devoré inside out and upside down, it's been my area of specialism for many, many years. Learn about the process & its intricacies and variants, see how I have used it [and continue to do so] within my work. I can offer this as an interactive talk, so those who wish can have a 'dabble'. NB.I shall be publishing a devoré book in the autumn of 2011.
