resources for the textile arts community
I have been working with fabric for as long as I can remember and have been teaching textile techniques to others for over 20 years. Until recently, I taught City and Guilds Feltmaking and HNC Stitched Textiles at Gloscat, but have recently retired from full time teaching to pursue my own work and teach freelance.
I have exhibited nationally and internationally with the International Feltmakers Association. In 2009, I had the privilege to be a resident felt maker in Finland, where I was able to use felting machinery and exhibit there.
My current work involves the use of natural dyes, specifically rust and woad, which are used in mixed media felt techniques. I am currently researching for a book on earth friendly dyeing.
I make felt because I love the wool fibre and the way it can always surprise me, no matter how many times I set out to use it. The variety of the medium delights me and I will never tire of it. My ideas come from my environment, in particular from my house in S.W. France and my love of natural dyeing inspires my use of colour. My latest work involves screen printing with natural dyes, using the thermofax screens that I make with my old thermofax machine.
Alongside the felt techniques I use, I also create altered books using mixed media techniques. I think this links my other work with my love of literature, which originally led me to study English literature at University. This year, I intend to combine the two areas and progress into felt books!
Learn how to use natural dyes in a way which needs no harmful chemicals to mordant the fabric. Use rust dyeing and compost dyeing techniques, as well as Solar dyeing. Students will create their own colours from natural substances; create a set of samples which will help them continue the techniques at home, and be able to stitch finished pieces, using the dyed cloth.
5 days
This course can build on the previous course, or be taken as a separate entity. Students will learn how to screen print and block print with thickened natural dyes, as well as stencilling. A set of samples will be created and finished pieces will be possible too.
5 days
Use Merino wool layered with dyed fabrics, digital images and found objects to create art pieces which relate to a theme which is personal to you. Push feltmaking to its limits!
5 days or weekend
This course will teach you how to use mixed media techniques to create a book, which is personal to you, based on a subject of your choice. The course could be ideal for any student with a research topic, or it could be an opportunity to create an heirloom book for a special present.
5 days or weekend.
I am always prepared to travel and teach groups, provided that my travel expenses are covered.
Fees are £200 per day and £340 for 2 days.
Please enquire for 5 day course costs.
