resources for the textile arts community
I am a textile artist whose practice is an eclectic mix of illustration, embroidery, fabric manipulation, mixed media collage, digital and screen printing, to create a rich multi-layered effect. My recent work explores the theme of memory and nostalgia through articles of clothing and discarded objects.
Up-cycling is an important philosophy in my art, hence I am a collector and a hoarder of many things such as treasure from beach-combing, old photographs, old letters, postcards, broken watch movements and keys. I especially love old fabrics and garments as they seem to be imbued with memories of past lives. Some of the objects in my collection have become the subject of my artwork, through a process of simple line drawing and machine embroidery, other objects form the materials which I use to create the artwork itself. Examples of my work feature in Val Holmes's Book Creative Recycling.
One recent find, a bundle of old letters written in the 1920s, resulted in my collaboration with a poet and culminated in the "Lightfoot Letters" exhibition at the Brindley Arts Centre in Runcorn.
I am a qualified, experienced tutor offering a range of one day workshops. I can also design workshops to meet your individual requirements and offer workshops for children, adults and older people with specific needs. All my workshops are designed to allow participants to create a piece of art which is inspired by their own memories. However I also provide a full range of materials for participants who have not brought their own materials.
I have a current CRB check and public liability insurance.
Make a personal memory collage based on one of your old photographs.
Using a simple collage technique you will make a paper-based collage which is then transferred to fabric.
I will bring along my collection of paper, fabrics, lace and ephemera for you to use as well as my old typewriter and alphabet stamps to add text to your work. Once the collage is completed I will transfer it to fabric and you can stitch into it if you want - it's as simple as that!
Suitable for all skill levels.
During the workshop you will construct a mixed media wall hanging using a variety of handmade and discarded paper, mixed media, and other ephemera.
You can bring along your own materials to make a hanging which is personal to yourself or you can choose to use items from Maria's large collection.
Suitable for all skill levels
Create a beautiful two dimensional dress panel using one of your own photographs for inspirations. During the workshop you will create a template from your images and build up a surface using either fabric of paper.
The choice of whether you want to use a sewing machine, handstiching or glue is entirely up to you as stunning effects can be achieved using each method.
You can even make a memento of a wedding!
Making Jewellery using Buttons
Bring along your button box and make an item of jewellery which will hold special memories for you. You will first how to select your buttons and make a button bracelet. Using the skills learnt from this you can go on to make necklaces, earring and kilt pins. If you don't have any buttons you can use mine!
This is a 45 minute visual talk during which I talk about my creative journey and bring along a selection of my work which can be passed round. The talk covers my inspiration for the work and the techniques I use. I encourage interaction from the group.
This talk details how the past provides inspiration for my work.
I bring along a selection of my work based on my own memories, and the narrative I discovered in a bundle of old letters.
The past has provided a rich vein of inspiration for my work and led to my collaboration with a poet which led to my solo exhibition.
