Sue Bleiweiss

Textile Artist and Tutor

Background

I think my love of working with textiles started when I took my first sewing class way back in the 1970s when I was just a teenager. I am mostly a self-taught fiber artist. I enjoy the process of experimenting with different techniques to discover what works. For me the journey of discovery is the most exciting part of my work.

My work has evolved and changed over the years and so has my interest in different elements of fiber arts. One of my current passions is working with silk fusion. Silk fusion is such a versatile medium as it can be created flat for sewing and embellishing or molded into structural objects. The possibilities seem endless and I am continually fascinated with it the more I work and experiment with it.

I am fortunate to be able to teach a wide range of fiber arts workshops using an online classroom venue. I love being able to interact with students from all over the world. Being able to pass on what I've learned through the exploration and experimentation of my work in fiber artistry is a great source of pleasure to me.

Online workshops

Introduction to silk fusion

In this class we will explore silk fusion as a flat surface and students will create several sheets of silk paper using soy silk fibers. We will apply color using Dye-Na-Flow paints and embellishments to the fusion and once dried into a flat sheet use them to create items such as boxes, jewelry, an amulet purse, an eyeglass case and more.

Silk Fusion II

This silk fusion workshop's focus will be on using molding techniques used to create structural objects such as vases and bowls. Students will also create several sheets of flat silk fusion and create several items such as jewelry and wall décor.

Working with Angelina Fibers

If you've ever held a bag of Angelina fibers in your hand and been totally mystified about what to do with these beautiful fibers then this class is for you! Angelina fibers are wonderfully versatile with hundreds of creative uses and in this workshop you'll learn how use them and what you can do with them. In this workshop we'll be working with heat-bondable Angelina fibers and you'll learn to make items such as vases, boxes, jewelry, handbags and more.

Free Motion Embroidery

In this workshop we will start with some easy stitching exercises to allow the students to get comfortable with their machines and the technique of free motion stitching. Then we'll begin to build on those basic skills each week and we'll explore using different materials as the base for our stitching. We'll work with a variety of materials including felt, water and heat soluble fabrics, velvet, cottons and paper. Each lesson also includes a project for students to make with the fabrics they create.

The art of the vest

In this class we'll be working with an easy 3-piece vest pattern and we'll create three different versions of this vest. Using the front two panels as our canvas we'll make our vests into a wearable work of art that is sure to turn heads.

Surface Design for handbags

Each week in this workshop we will explore a different type of fabric surface design technique and then use a piece of the fabric we create to make a handbag or purse. My goal is to give you an introduction to these techniques that will give you a base to go off and explore them in depth on your own. You can choose which surface design techniques appeal to you and focus just on those or explore them all.
